Take a look at the picture to your right: Church and State. A conspiracy of Pharisees and Sadducees, representing Judaism, bring a Jewish peasant known as Jesus of Nazareth before Pontius Pilate, the Procurator of Judea, a man who represents the power and might of Imperial Rome.

Much has been made of the Gospel accounts of the Passion of Christ: these have been used to justify pogroms and genocide against the innocent Jewish people for thousands of years. In living memory the actions, or more accurately, the lack of action of Pope Pius XII [exposed in a recent book by John Cornwell entitled Hitler's Pope] contributed very significantly to the horrific death toll of Jews during the Holocaust. Adolph Hitler, a Roman Catholic, was never excommunicated by the Catholic Church.
This is the Religion of Politics; it is the myth of separation of church and state.
Christ before Pilate
